Explaining “Black Protests” Against Abortion Ban in Poland | Poland for Beginners

Despite the chilly autumn weather and pouring rain, tens of thousands of Polish women took to the streets on Monday, 3 October, 2016. The Castle Square in Warsaw and various places in over 140 Polish cities and villages were filled by women dressed clad in black, carrying hand-made banners bearing phrases such as “My body, my choice!,” “I am, I think, I decide!,” “The government is not a pregnancy – it can be easily removed,”  and “Keep your rosaries out of my ovaries!.” The aim of the meeting is to discuss why Polish women mobilized in such large numbers in 2016, how the protests were developed, and to what extent were they successful.
